Construction and locking principle – pin and tab as a combined assembly

The tab is usually attached to the side of the bolt head and engages in a form-fitting manner on a contact surface or bore on the support. The tab is fixed via an additional screw or pin so that the pin neither rotates nor shifts. Steel versions made of tempered or case-hardening steel with additional galvanising or browning are common. The tab shape follows the geometry of the contact surface and is dimensioned so that the lock holds reliably even under dynamic loads.

What to consider during selection and replacement

Important factors are bolt diameter, length under the head and the exact geometry of the tab – in particular screw hole spacing and tab thickness. Before replacement, the bearing bores on the support should be checked for wear edges and run-outs. A bent tab or torn-out screw holes usually mean a complete bolt replacement. During installation, the bearing point is cleaned and lightly greased, and the tab is then fastened with the specified tightening torque.
