Valve cartridges, often called cartridge valves, are compact switching elements that are screwed directly into the cavities of a valve block. They take over functions such as pressure relief, flow regulation or directional control in a modular design. Cartridge design and modular cavity – the principle behind it

The cartridge construction combines seat, piston, springs and seals in a cylindrical housing that is screwed into a standardised cavity in the valve block. This allows a single function to be replaced without dismantling the complete valve block. Standardised cavity dimensions enable different functions to be used in the same cavity – from check valves and throttles to pilot-operated solenoid valves. External seal rings safely separate the individual control channels and prevent uncontrolled pressure build-up.

Replacing at the valve block – the most important inspection points

When replacing a valve cartridge it is worth checking the cavity in the valve block: chips, grooves or damaged seal seats prevent reliable sealing. Pay attention to the matching external thread, identical internal geometries and the prescribed tightening torque. New cartridges are usually supplied with mounted seal rings – these should be lightly oiled before insertion so they are not sheared off when screwing in. After installation, a functional test with controlled pressure build-up follows.
