Support cylinders – safe support on the ground during loading

Support cylinders extend towards the ground during the lowering operation and absorb the vertical load of the platform during loading or unloading at ground level. They relieve lift cylinders and lifting frames, stabilise the chassis and provide a calm support surface during loading and unloading. Supporting under load – design and operating principle

Support cylinders work as single-acting or double-acting units and extend at the end of the lowering stroke as soon as the platform reaches the ground. Through an integrated stop plate or a widened foot they distribute the load over a larger bearing area and prevent point loads on asphalt or yard surfaces. Rod material in hard-chromed steel, hardened rod guides and scrapers protected against contamination make the component insensitive to road salt and yard dirt. In the retracted state the cylinder rests protected on the frame.

Inspect, adjust, replace – the service points

When replacing a support cylinder, first check the condition of the rod surface and the scrapers – a scratched rod tube leads to rapid wear of the new seals. Pay attention to the matching connection pattern, the correct stroke and the position of the stop point. After installation, a ground-contact test with a full platform is worthwhile – the support must rest completely on the ground before the platform weight is taken up. Otherwise tilt positions and uncontrolled load changes can occur.
