Carbon brushes transfer the operating current from the stationary brush holder to the rotating commutator of the electric motor and belong to the regularly scheduled wear parts of a tail lift. Material and function – carbon-graphite mixtures in sliding contact

Carbon brushes consist of pressed carbon-graphite mixtures whose copper or resin binder content is matched to the respective current flow and speed. A pressure spring keeps the brush in constant contact with the commutator and compensates for ongoing wear over the service life. The pigtail and plug contact provide the electrical connection to the positive terminal of the motor. The designs differ in brush cross section, length, spring preload and connection type – each matched to the installed power pack.

Replacement interval and inspection criteria

Worn carbon brushes show themselves through decreasing motor performance, sparking at the commutator and unusual noises under load. At the latest when the brush length falls below the minimum mark, replacement is due – otherwise the pigtail will damage the commutator. During installation always replace in pairs, clean the brush holder and check the free movement of the spring. A run-in brush adapts to the commutator profile after a short operating period.
