Plugs – the active plug side for detachable electrical connections on the vehicle

Plugs form the active, movable side of a connector and typically sit at the end of a cable or wiring harness. Through their contact pins they bring control elements, signal lines and lighting strings together with the on-board electrical system – quickly detachable for service and repair, and mechanically as well as electrically robust once mated. At SULEJ Ladebordwand you will find plugs for the replacement of damaged or corroded connectors on tail lifts, lift gates and adjacent body areas.

Round plugs, flat plugs and bayonet locking: common designs

The plug design determines how the plug side is guided in the mating part, retained and secured against accidental disconnection. Round plugs with a cylindrical housing centre via a circumferential collar and are often used in multi-pole versions. Flat plugs with a rectangular housing cross-section suit confined mounting situations. Bayonet locking plugs engage with the socket through a quarter turn in a positive-locking manner and reliably secure the connection against vibration in the demanding driving operation of a commercial vehicle.

Material, contact design and on-board electrical layout

The plug housing is mostly made of impact-resistant plastic that withstands oil, road salt and mechanical loads. The contact pins are designed for crimp or solder termination and are usually nickel- or gold-plated to keep contact resistance and corrosion low. The layout is typical for the 12 / 24 volt on-board systems of commercial vehicles, with common IP protection classes for mobile outdoor applications. Such plugs are used for connecting foot switches, hand-cable switches, control box lines and LED or incandescent lighting circuits.

Benefits at a glance

  • Active plug side at the cable end – quickly detachable for service and diagnostics
  • Housing designs round, flat or with bayonet locking depending on the installation situation
  • Plastic housing with nickel- or gold-plated contacts for low contact resistance
  • Layout for the common 12 / 24 volt on-board systems and mobile outdoor use

A suitably chosen plug ensures an electrically clean and mechanically stable connection and reduces downtime during service work on the control and lighting circuits.
